A Day in the Life

a-day-in-the-life

Before I share with you how I keep myself organized (coming soon), I wanted to give y'all a glimpse into what a normal weekday looks like for me. So welcome to my yesterday:

5:30am - Alarm went off. Got up, went to the bathroom, checked social media really quick, and went back to bed.

5:36am - Woke up to Matt saying, "You ready to Legs, Calves, & Abs?" I groaned, while laughing in my subconscious about how he uses workout types as verbs. Matt said, "1-2-3-attack" and flipped the lights on in our bedroom. I groaned again, rolling over onto my side while (again subconsciously) appreciating his The Other Guys reference.

5:38am - Rolled myself out of bed. Quickly caught up on Instagram, Twitter, and email. Brushed my teeth, put on gym clothes

5:49am - Put on a long-sleeved half zip and head out the door. It was actually pretty chilly, and I wished that I had brought a jacket.

6:01am - Arrived at our gym (our gym is about half a mile from our apartment). The sun is still down, but I'm starting to feel awake. We do a legs, calves, and abs workout including the following exercises:

  • Squats on the squat rack
  • Weighted lunges
  • Seated calf raises
  • Reverse crunches
  • Leg curls
  • Air squats
  • Crunches
  • In and out abs
  • Calf raises on the leg press

6:39am - Grabbed a sip of water from the water fountain, and left the gym. The sun was starting to come up.

6:50am - Arrived back at our apartment, made a protein shake and read/commented on some blogs

  • Protein Shake:
    • 1 scoop Gold Standard 100% Whey Protein
    • 3 ice cubes
    • 1/2 banana
    • A sprinkle of cinnamon
    • About 1/4 cup water

7:00am - Showered

7:12am - Got dressed, put on makeup, cooked up some protein pancakes, ate pancakes while working on blog stuff/scheduling tweets for the day, packed lunch. (I add my food into Myfitnesspal as I go, keeping an eye on my macros so that I can meet my end of day goals.)

8:03am - Didn't have time to finish pancakes, so pack those up to eat at work too, and head out the door. It's a half mile walk to the subway station. I read three chapters of Proverbs and then switch over to the Fitnessista's new ebook: Build Up Your Blog during my commute.

9:02am - Arrived at work, fill my 32oz Nalgene water bottle, warm up my leftover pancakes, sit down and catch up on emails

  • My work included a lot of content feedback/development for my company's website revamp project that we're working on.

11:39am - Felt hungry, so I decided to eat my greek yogurt (even though I was planning to eat it in the afternoon.)

1:16pm - Finished off my first Nalgene, then refilled my bottle. Ate lunch at my desk: 4.4oz chicken, 1/2 cup broccoli, and 1 raw red bell pepper. Had too much stuff to do today to be social during lunch.

4:43pm - Got crazy hungry. Since I stupidly ate my afternoon snack in the morning. I had to run out and get a Quest bar to hold me over. I chose the low carb Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough kind. So good.

5:08pm - Finished second Nalgene. I try to drink 2 at work everyday. That way I know I have at least 64oz before I count during workout water, and evening water.

6:19am - Left the office.

6:44pm - While still on a very crowded train on the way home, I was reading more of the Fitnessista's ebook when I notice a short, black, curly hair (not mine) fall on my screen. Appalled, I quickly tip my phone and shake it off. I'm too grossed out to look around and see who that hair might have belonged to. Oh, the joys of New York!

7:02pm - Got off the subway and walked home

7:16pm - Arrived at apartment. Matt has cooked dinner (PTL!), and he made yummy ground turkey tacos on corn tortillas. Oh man, they were yummy!! We were in a hurry to get to our church small group meeting, so I chugged (can you use the word "chugged" when talking about a solid food?) down 3 tacos.

7:31pm - Left apartment for small group.

7:50pm - Arrived at small group. The apartment we met in was so awesome. I would have taken a picture for y'all to see, but that felt kind of awkward. Their apartment is so hip -- recycled wood and piping all over the place, big wooden furniture, cool rugs, etc. This was our first time going to a small group for our church (they take the summer off), so the meeting was mostly just hanging out and talking about expectations. It was really great.

10:01pm - Headed home.

10:16pm - Arrived at apartment. We still had to do some prep stuff because my mom and my brother are coming in tonight!! Matt cleaned the kitchen while I swept, swiffered, and cleaned the bathroom.

11:03pm - Sat down to work on this post.

11:33pm - Feeling very tired. Debate with myself about whether I should try to wake up early to work on the photos for this post. Decide to just finish it up now.

11:40pm - Upload all the photos I took on my camera to my computer.

11:44pm - Started photoshopping images.

12:07pm - Finished photoshopping, added all the imagery to the post. Added external links.

12:08am - Set alarm for 5:30am. Went to bed.

While yesterday morning was very typical, yesterday evening was not. I normally go to bed around 10. Looking back, I probably shouldn't have planned a next-day-turnaround post on a day that I have so much stuff to do in the evening.

Normally, Matt and I cook dinner together. We eat it leisurely while watching our current Netflix show (right now, that's Friday Night Lights). We would take Morton for a walk, and then I head to my desk to work on prepping the next day's post/email/social).

Learning from my mistakes! Lesson: on days with packed evenings, plan/write/photoshop/schedule the next day's post in advance so that I don't have to stay up so late.

What's a scheduling lesson that you've learned lately? How do you help yourself by better managing your time? Let me know in the comment section below.
