I don't know why corporate offices do this to their employees, but every office space that I have ever worked in has been full of sugar-heavy snacks and beverages. When that's the only thing available, it is so crazy tempting.
I mean... look at this candy and soda craziness in my NYC office:
This is a serious issue for those of us who try really hard to make good food choices.
And people are always bringing in leftover sweets that they are trying to get out of their home (because they don't want to eat all of it). Birthday parties, office lunches, bagel breakfasts... the unhealthy list goes on and on!
So how do you combat this oh-so-sweet temptation? Planning and petitioning!
BYOS (Bring Your Own Snacks)
The number one thing you can do to avoid eating/drinking this sugary crap is to simply bring your own snacks. If you have a healthy option available, it will be so much easier to resist the candy, chips, and other unhealthy free food.
Sidenote: just because it's free doesn't mean you have to eat it.
Here are some easy healthy snacks you can bring to avoid the vending machine:
- Fresh fruit
- Low fat string cheese
- Mixed nuts
- Greek yogurt
- Protein bars (I like Quest)
If you want to get fancy, here are a few more ideas:
Ask for other options
Bringing your snacks is key, but it doesn't hurt to ask HR (or whoever is in charge of purchasing snacks) if some of the junk could be supplemented with healthier options.
Before you ask, take a quick office poll. If you're the only person who isn't head over heels for free candy, just leave it and bring your own snacks. If other people are trying to make healthier choices, go ahead and move forward.
I would pull together some comparative pricing -- what you pay now for snacks vs how much it would cost to have a few healthy options.
In your email/discussion, provide that pricing and be sure to mention that healthier snacks will help keep employees from suffering from the dreaded sugar crash (which drains productivity). Healthier snacks could mean happier employees and more productive work! Everyone wins.
I did this in my office, and now they are providing mixed nuts, some fruit, and seltzer water as healthier options!
It is totally worth asking if you're not the only one!
