BK Half Training: Week 2

What I did (Week 2: March 30 – April 5, 2015)

Monday - 4 mile run

I've been feeling extra exhausted lately -- not sure why -- but I've had a really hard time waking up early enough to fit in a run. On Monday, Matt and I went to the gym after work. He did chest and triceps and I ran on the [stupid] treadmill. I maintained an 8-minute pace for 4 miles, and I hated pretty much every second of it. I listened to a Layne Norton podcast about becoming a personal trainer/coach. The content was really good, but the volume levels were all over the place. It was hard to run while turning the volume up and down based on who was talking. This is a major pet peeve of mine with podcasts -- sporadic volume levels. Anyways, I finished this run at the pace I wanted. During the run, I was pretty miserable. After, I felt great.

Tuesday - HIIT + Shoulder & Abs

I stayed in my apartment for this workout (feeling a little lazy again). After completing a Kayla Itsines HIIT workout (what she calls "resistance"), I worked out with the dumbbells we have in our apartment.

Excuse me while I "Bro out" for a second - I love working out shoulders because it's my favorite pump. After finishing a heavy shoulder workout, my shoulders look really strong and that makes me happy. I don't want to lose my precious muscle while training for this half, so I am making sure to hit all of my upper body workouts.

Wednesday - Back & Biceps

I killed my biceps on Wednesday. It was great. I curled more reps at my normal weight than I have in ages. My arms were throbbing by the end of the workout. I didn't do any pull-ups because the gym was super crowded, but I think I'm still progressing towards my goal number of pull-ups (10 in a row from a dead hang). 

Thursday - Yoga

I was feeling stressed on Thursday, so I opted for a short, restorative yoga session. I'm learning more and more about how to listen to my body and not push myself into injuries and over exertion. I think it's so important to be goal-oriented but also gentle with yourself. 

After work, I did some emergency babysitting for one of my favorite toddlers. After he went to bed, I got to break in my new NASM Personal Training textbook -- guys, I'm getting certified! Getting the certification is going to be a difficult process. It's a ton of material and I have to pass the test by September. A lot of my free time for the next couple months will involve my nose being in this textbook. 

Friday - Walked the High Line

Before heading over to Union Square for Good Friday service, Matt, my brother-in-law and I took a long walk on the high line. If you visit NYC, I highly recommend taking some time to walk along this elevated path. This railway skeleton has been turned into a scenic park with great views of the city. 

Saturday - 8 mile run

This was the longest I've run in probably 2 years. I took a good amount of time off of distance running after my last half marathon. I was a little nervous about this one, but it turned out to be a fantastic run. 

My soundtrack was a Rich Roll podcast about turning your passion into a career. It was about a entrepreneur in the cycling industry and it was very engaging. I love podcasts like this. Well executed, interesting content, and pertaining to the health and fitness industry. 

I opted to not wear a jacket because last week, I became pretty overheated after mile 3. This was a great decision. I was a little cold at the beginning, but my body warmed up quickly. The weather was perfect for running. It felt like the first true glimpse of spring running weather. People were coming out of hibernation to take a walk in the park and go to the farmer's market. It was quite lovely. After about mile 4, my mind became filled with self doubt. I started thinking -- maybe I'm not ready for this distance. Maybe I should take a break to walk. Maybe I should curtail this run and just head back home. I thought about it for a bit, and realized I was just being a wimp (no injury or overexertion at this point). I pushed through that little wall. Miles 6 and 7 were difficult, but thankfully the weather was amazing and I had lots of pretty things to look at to distract me from the distance.

By the time I hit mile 7, I felt like I was basically done. All I had to do was get back home so that I could pour myself a huge glass of water. Traffic was pretty kind to me, and I made it home without having to stop too often. 

When I heard "Eight miles completed" in my headphones, I threw my fist up into the air (literally) with excitement. I was about a half a mile from home at this point, so I had a good amount of time to walk and cool down before plopping myself onto the couch at home.

Overall, I think this long run went just about as well as it could have gone.

I felt so good about this run. Despite my achey knees, I was incredibly impressed with my own ability to maintain a good pace. I was very sore for the next day or two, especially because after running 8 miles, we did a little bit of sight seeing with my brother-in-law. I ended up walking 23,000 steps on Saturday! (Fitbit stats)

Sunday - REST

Sunday was a true rest day. I slept in, ate a leisurely breakfast, went to church, did some cooking, joined our good friends for supper at their home, and just had a chill evening with Matt and my brother-in-law before he had to go back to Texas.
