Which protein I take and why

I guess I titled this the opposite of the order I want to lay this out -- but "Why I take protein and which brand I take" doesn't roll off the tongue very well...

Anyways, let's get started with the why.

Why I take protein

It's pretty hard for me to add muscle to my body, and that's true for most women. Taking protein alone is never going to make me look like a man because that's just not my body type (I would have to eat so much chicken and brown rice to do that. So much). Protein helps me build lean muscle as well as repair the micro muscle tears that occur from lifting weights -- that's basically how muscles build. They tear and then protein repairs them and makes them bigger/better. 

Is protein powder required? No. There's nothing a supplement can offer that real, whole foods can't provide. I just don't like eating meat that often, so protein works well for me to get protein directly to my muscles after my workouts. I try to take it within 30 minutes after lifting, and I don't usually take it on days that I don't lift. 

Which protein I take

I've tried a bunch of different brands. My current favorite is the Cellucor CorPerformance Whey Protein line. It's a great, lean protein that has delicious flavors - cake batter (CorFetti), chocolate raspberry truffle, and cinnamon swirl are my favorites. The powder has BCAAs built in, which also helps a ton in muscle repair.  

For making protein pancakes, I've found Tone It Up's Perfect Fit brown rice protein to work the best. It has a little bit of a chalky aftertaste, but the texture for pancakes is so much better with this powder. As an added benefit, it's totally gluten free and vegan. And it's made with natural/organic ingredients. 

How I take it

Ever since we got our NutriBullet, I've been making simple shakes with my protein. Here's the quick recipe:

  • 1 scoop protein powder
  • 3 ice cubes
  • 1/2 frozen banana
  • 1/2 cup coconut water
  • 1 tsp flax seeds

I also like simply dissolving it in water, making protein pancakes, and making other protein-based desserts.
