My first week in NYC

Sorry that I've been MIA lately. I've been running around this city like a crazy woman. This week has had some serious highs and some serious lows, but I am so incredibly excited about this new adventure! Let me just recap the week a bit:

Transporting luggage in the city is a huge pain in the rear. If you take a cab, it's gonna cost you at least $50. If you take public transit, it's going to suck. And everyone who is on the train with you is going to give you the stink eye. It is what it is.


I've definitely felt a good deal of homesickness in the past week. My husband, my family, my puppy, my church, my friends, and everything I'm familiar with is in Houston. It's been a lot of change at once, and this has all happened really fast. Missing Matt has been extremely hard, but we've been able to talk every single day. I can't wait to see him on May 16 (going to TX for a wedding, and then Matt and his brother are driving all our stuff up to the city)!

Like I said, I've been all over this city in the past week for interviews. I've been able to get a feel for the subway system (only took the wrong subway twice).

The weather has been just about perfect. High in the 70s, sunny skies, and a little bit of a breeze. And the people have been surprisingly helpful. The stereotype that all New Yorkers are jerks is a bit of an overreaction. They are busy, yes. They are often in a hurry, yes. But I've had so many people stop to help me, offer me good advice, and really go out of their way to do something nice. Not a lot of New Yorkers are native. This is a very diverse city, and there are people from all different backgrounds. There are definitely nice people in the city.

I've been trying to keep up with all of my healthy lifestyle stuff while I've been up here. I will say that it has been difficult. I'm staying with friends in right now, so I don't have all of my familiar kitchen tools. But the friends that I am staying with eat really healthy too, and that has been wonderful. Also, I don't have a gym membership up here yet.

I made a trip to the Trader Joe's in Brooklyn, because it felt more familiar than other local grocery stores. The TJs is in an old, gorgeous bank building -- definitely the fanciest TJs I've ever been to.

I've been running more than normal (because it's something you can do without a gym membership), and I've been doing some bodyweight exercises. When the weather gets better, I'm going to post a workout that you can do at Prospect Park in Brooklyn. I have some great ideas-- Stay tuned!!

Today, I ran from Crown Heights to the Brooklyn Bridge. It was raining pretty bad, so I ended up taking the subway back. So worth it.

Beautiful, right? This bridge is probably my favorite NYC landmark.

On Sunday, I tried out Resurrection Brooklyn Church. It's a new Presbyterian church plant that's affiliated with Tim Keller's Redeemer Presbyterian. They met in Clinton Hill (Brooklyn) in a historic Presbyterian church. The people were incredibly kind and welcoming to me.

On Sunday, I also met up with some Tone It Up (#TIUNYC) girls for lunch at Sweet Green on Broadway. One of the girls was actually from Houston, just like me! They were really helpful and kind, and they gave me a bunch of apartment hunting advice. I'm looking forward to meeting up with them more in the months to come!

I have good, big news on the job hunt as well, but you guys will have to wait a little bit for that (till everything is official). Now, the apartment search begins!!
